Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione Castellina

Chianti Classico DOCG
Buiano Gran Selezione Castellina

Vinification

The vineyard sits on a hill, on one side soils are clay-loam based while on the other side the soil texture is sandy and loose, both with a high percentage of very fine calcareous gravel.

Winemaking

Produced from a careful selection of the finest Sangiovese berries. Grape clusters were attentively selected, hand harvested and brought to the cellar in small crates. The grapes were again manually sorted on sorting tables to ensure that only perfect berries reached fermentation vats, then destemmed and delicately crushed. Fermentation took place in small stainless steel fermentation vats for about 20 days, performing delicate punch-downs and controlled pump-overs. A constant temperature of 30 °C (86 °F) was maintained during alcoholic fermentation to enhance aromatic intensity and preserve the grape variety’s characteristic complexity. Malolactic fermentation was completed in stainless steel vats and in February, the wine was transferred into 500-liter French oak barrels where it continued to age for about 11 months before aging in bottle.

Historical Data

Fattoria Buiano estate is located in the heart of the western slopes of Castellina in Chianti, in the province of Siena, at 300 meters above sea level (984 feet) in an area called Bozzagone. Set on a natural terrace, the location is both strategic and beautiful overlooking Val d’Elsa. Clear days offer fascinating views that span from the Colline Metallifere (metal bearing hills) near Larderello to the southwest, San Gimignano to the west, and the peaks of the Apuan Alps to the northwest. Fattoria Buiano is a 100-hectare estate (247 acres), of which 51 hectares (126 acres) are planted with grape vines surrounded by green forests of Turkey-oak trees. Its northern border is Fosso Buio, to the east the crest of Castellina’s hillside ridge, to the south the Montornello hill, while the Carfini River descends to the west defining the last border.

Tasting Notes

The nose presents sweet aromas of cherry jam together with hints of blackberries and black currants accompanied by impressions of lavender, myrtle, spicy pink pepper and notes of marzipan. The palate is well-balanced and approachable: entry on the palate is reserved and intriguing, then juicy with velvety tannins and excellent freshness. The finish is long and harmonious accented by notes of plums, licorice and cocoa powder.
