Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione Gaiole

San Sano Gran Selezione Gaiole

Vinification

Produced from vineyards located at the estate’s highest elevation, with southern sunlight exposure, on a hillside that slopes down from 450 meters above sea level (1,476 feet) with a 10% gradient towards San Sano. Vineyard soils are mainly ochre clay with abundant very fine gravel (called scheletro) of alberese and galestro and with some scattered outcrops of exposed bedrock. The climate of this area is typical Mediterranean, with cold windy winters and hot, dry, breezy summers with excellent temperature swings between day and night.

Winemaking

Produced from a careful selection of the finest Sangiovese berries. Grape clusters were attentively selected, hand harvested and brought to the cellar in small crates. The grapes were again manually sorted on sorting tables to ensure that only perfect berries reached fermentation vats, then destemmed and delicately crushed. Fermentation took place in small 5-ton stainless steel fermentation vats for about 20 days, performing delicate punch-downs and controlled pump-overs. A constant temperature of 30 °C (86 °F) was maintained during alcoholic fermentation to enhance aromatic intensity and preserve the grape variety’s identity. Malolactic fermentation was completed in stainless steel vats, and, in February 2022, the wine was transferred into 1,200-liter French oak barrels where it continued to age for about 11 months. San Sano was aged 18 additional months in bottle before being released.

Historical Data

The San Sano estate is located in Gaiole in Chianti, in the province of Siena: a remarkable terroir with rugged steep slopes, narrow valleys and rough ridges eroded by the Massellone torrent to the east and the Arbia to the west. A fascinating territory with a tapestry of landscapes from Turkey-oak forests, to vineyards, olive groves and historic villages. The estate covers an area of about 200 hectares (494 acres) of which 100 (247 acres) are planted almost exclusively to Sangiovese and partly exposed to northwest and southeast at an altitude between 375 and 450 meters (1,230-1,476 feet) above sea level.

Tasting Notes

The nose offers fresh aromas of raspberries, currants and blueberries together with sweet hints of goji berries and lively aromas of pomegranate. The bouquet is completed by floral notes of lilies of the valley and delicate hints of gianduja and talc. The palate is vibrant, linear and energetic. Extraordinary freshness is accompanied by outstanding minerality and fine, savory tannins. The wine closes with a long finish accented by notes of lychee, tamarind and dried fruit.
