Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione San Casciano

Chianti Classico DOCG
Villa Cigliano Gran Selezione San Casciano

Vinification

Soils in this area are clay based with a veining of limestone and sand and a high content of fine gravel, both in the form of round pebbles originating from rivers, and Galestro and Alberese stones, providing excellent groundwater resources to the vines even during seasons that experience extreme heat and drought.

Winemaking

Freshly harvested grapes were brought to the cellar, destemmed and gently crushed. The must was transferred into stainless steel vats where alcoholic fermentation took place at a controlled temperature of 28 °C (82 °F). Maceration techniques were performed delicately to guarantee an intense extraction while preserving the elegance and softness of tannins. The wine was then transferred into oak for malolactic fermentation. Once completed, the wine continued to age in French oak barriques for about 14 months. Villa Cigliano was estate bottled and continued to age in the bottle before being released.

Historical Data

Villa del Cigliano is nestled in the rolling hillsides of the Additional Geographical Unit (U.G.A.) of San Casciano, in the province of Florence: a terroir that is remarkable for the uniform nature of its hillsides, natural landscapes and wines. The area surrounding San Casciano is a large alluvial plateau located at an altitude that varies between 250 and 420 meters above sea level (820-1378 feet). The climate in this area is prevalently continental with excellent temperature swings between day and night accompanied by coastal breezes. These climatic conditions are ideal for ensuring optimal growth, development and ripening phases.

Tasting Notes

The nose offers intense notes of ripe black cherries, carob, cassis and blood oranges that lead over to fresh hints of myrtle and sweet impressions of vanilla, bitter chocolate and licorice. Entry on the palate is mouth filling, creamy and energetic. Supple velvety tannins are sustained by excellent freshness. The long persistent finish delivers hints of vanilla, cocoa and coffee.
